Quilted Journal Covers

 Hello there.....Happy Tuesday!

Quilted journal covers are another one of my favorite quick projects! I made a couple of new ones to go along with my new quilted laptop sleeve here.

Quilted journal covers are fun, functional and a terrific way to use up scraps!

Patchwork Hexagon Journal Cover

I created the hexagon shape by stitching rows of half hexies. My scraps were at least 2.5 inches wide, and I used the Missouri Star Quilt Company half hexie template, designed for charm squares, for ease of cutting the shape but any ruler with a 60-degree marking would work.

I cut 36 half hexagons, 15 sets of matching half hexagons and 6 random ones. I laid out the half hexagons in six (6) rows, matching fabric in adjacent rows to form hexagons. I sewed the half hexagons together by row then joined the rows together.

Once the rows were assembled, I trimmed the quilt top to the size I needed.

Next, I basted and quilted the top. I cut my backing and pocket pieces from another batik in my stash.

The final assembly included laying the quilted cover right sides together atop the back and pockets, making sure the raw edges were aligned.

I stitched through all layers and left an opening for turning. Once the cover was right side out, I top stitched the entire unit.

Flying Geese Journal Cover

The inspiration for my second quilted journal cover came from this tutorial by Robin Pickens. I modified the pattern so I could use 2x4 inch flying geese, and I added a pencil holder on the inside.

Are you a fan of quilted journal covers? I'm thinking about making a few as gifts this year.

Until next time...craft the life you love ❣

  1. Hi Karla! Oh, I love your versions of journal covers. I was going to say the hexagon was my favorite until I looked at the FG again. They are both nifty! I've been making them using jelly roll strips. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
